Due to the increasing digitization of our society, competencies regarding the handling of data and information gain in importance. This includes a variety of topics, from basics in computer science, methods for data collection, analysis and visualization of data to the contemplation of ethical, legal and social aspects regarding the handling of data.

The respective competencies are relevant in different areas of live and are therefore an important qualification for all students.

    Study and Research Data-based methods play a central role in research and are thus an important part of university education.
    Although they are traditionally more associated with the natural, life and social sciences, all research fields work with certain types of data and the corresponding methods become increasingly important.

    Job and career The conscious handling of data and digital methods is an essential part in many work areas. This trend will continue in the following years and the corresponding competencies represent an important qualification for applicants.
    On the other hand, data and IT specialists often work interdisciplinary settings and need to be aware of requirements and limits regarding the use of data in different application fields.

    Participation in society Due to the increasing digitization and datafication of our society, basic competencies regarding the handling of data are an important prerequisite for assessing developments, making conscious decisions and participating in society.

Since the broad spectrum of topics goes way beyond the traditional borders of the individual research fields, the interdisciplinary programme offers an ideal opportunity to dive into the depths of the topic, to look beyond one's own horizon and to get in contact with people from other areas.

For whom is DaLiJe?

The short answer is: For all students. We are aware that you all have different background knowledge and interests. Participating in the programme can have different benefits for different participants.

  • Data Beginner – Data have never been of big interest for you?

    Even if you were never really interested in data, basic competencies regarding the conscious handling are essential. Not only when you work with your own data and information, but also when you want to assess the methods and conclusions of others.

    In the certificate programme you can learn the basics in working with data and information as well the use of digital tools, even if you have no specific prior knowledge. The first level of the programme gives an overview of important aspects that have to be considered in data handling. These competencies are also helpful to judge the benefits and limits of data applications and the potential social consequences.

    It is up to you, whether you only want to complete the first level of the programme or if you go on with the further levels.

  • Data Curious – You have always been interested in data but there were no opportunities to deepen your knowledge?

    If you were always interested in topics regarding the work with data and/ or the use of digital technologies, the certificate programme is a good opportunity to delve deeper into these topics. No specific prior knowledge is required for participation.

    The first level gives an overview of important aspects of data handling. If you want to know more about specific topics, you can participate in the subsequent levels.

  • Data Expert – Handling data is your everyday work?

    If you are comfortable with more advanced topics on the handling of data, statistical analysis and/or the use of digital tools, the programme may offer you interesting courses on additional topics/methods.

    In addition, it offers the opportunity to get in contact with new perspectives on the topic from other fields of expertise. This can help to learn about possible applications as well as potentials and restriction.

    Especially, knowledge about legal requirements and the critical contemplation of the effects of the application of data and the digitization of our society are an important prerequisite for the conscious handling of data in private live as well as in science and world of work.
